OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team swept Brockport in a doubleheader at home on Sunday afternoon. In game one, Oswego topped Brockport, 5-2. The Lakers followed up in game two with a 6-5 victory. With the wins, Oswego improves to 15-11 on the season and 8-6 in SUNYAC play, while Brockport falls to 11-15 overall and 1-9 in conference action.
In game one, Oswego got to Brockport early.
Angela Frampton drew a walk in the first inning, coming around to score on a clutch two-out double by
Gabriella Vertuccio.
Two innings later, the Lakers added to their lead.
Rebecca Vilchez led off the third with a single, and
Madelana Wrubel sent her home with a double to left field. Moving to third on a wild pitch, Wrubel scored as well on a sacrifice fly by Frampton.
After Brockport managed a run in the fourth, Oswego answered in the fifth. Vilchez led off the inning with a solo homer to left, helping her own cause. The top of the lineup continued to produce, as Wrubel followed up with a double to left. Later in the inning, Wrubel scored on Vertuccio's sacrifice fly to put Oswego up 5-1.
On the mound in game one, starting pitcher Vilchez allowed just one earned run in five innings of work, without walking a single Brockport batter. Frampton came on in relief, pitching two innings without allowing an earned run. The junior gave up just two hits and struck out two of the nine Golden Eagles she faced.
In game two, when Brockport put up a run in the first, Oswego came back with one of its own in the bottom half. Vilchez led off the game with a double, and Wrubel knocked a single up the middle to tie the game.
With Brockport leading 3-1 in the sixth inning, the Laker bats heated up. Frampton ripped a double to left field to start things off, and pinch runner
Joelle Nesci cut the Brockport lead later in the inning when
Sarah McCullough singled her home. McCullough came around to tie the game when
Jessica Roe drove a single up the middle. The next batter,
Erin Sweeney, helped Oswego gain the lead with a single through the left side that advanced
Claire Hewitt, who came around to score on an error. Vilchez notched another double for Oswego's final runs of the inning, putting Oswego up 6-3.
Vilchez threw six innings in game two, allowing just two earned runs to receive the win. Frampton pitched an inning as well, also allowing two earned runs.
Oswego faces a quick turnaround as it hosts Alfred for a nonconference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Monday.
