Men's Soccer Defeats St. Lawrence, 3-1, for First Win in Series Since 2008

CANTON, N.Y. – For the first time since 2008, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team topped non-conference rival St. Lawrence University, overcoming a 1-0 halftime deficit to prevail, 3-1, over the Saints on Tuesday afternoon at MacAllaster Field.

It also marked the Cardinals' first win at MacAllaster Field since 2005, the year in which Plattsburgh State went 22-2-0 overall and advanced to the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Plattsburgh State rises to 6-2-0 overall with the win and opens up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday, Sept. 23, when it hosts SUNY Potsdam in a 1 p.m. contest at the Field House Complex. St. Lawrence drops to 2-4-1 overall with the loss and next hosts Union College in its Liberty League opener on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m.

Though the Cardinals controlled the tempo early, taking five shots in the first 15 minutes of play, St. Lawrence netted the first goal of the afternoon in the 17th minute. Freshman defender Dylan McDonough scored by burying an unsettled ball in the 18-yard box following a corner kick. St. Lawrence took that 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission, though Plattsburgh State held a 16-4 edge in shots in the opening frame.

Senior forward Nicholas Laurent (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) tied the score at 1-all in the 65th minute, heading in a goal on a high-arcing feed by sophomore forward Sean Cray (Modena, N.Y./Wallkill) at point-blank range. Just 21 seconds later, sophomore midfielder Connor Nembach (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) buried a goal from 12 yards out following a deflection to give the Cardinals the lead. Finally, in the 70th minute, Cray put the game on ice by cashing in on a feed from senior defender Elver Maldonado (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck).

Plattsburgh State finished with a 24-13 edge in shots and an 11-7 cushion in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) earned the win for the Cardinals, making five saves, while his counterpart, junior goalkeeper Mike Smith, turned aside four shots in the loss for the Saints.
