Cortland Drops 2-1 Non-Conference Game vs. Skidmore

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Matt Wolf (Naperville, IL/Syracuse Stars) scored a power-play goal early in the third period to lift the Skidmore men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory at Cortland Saturday night in non-conference action. The Red Dragons dropped to 0-2 with the setback, while the Thoroughbreds improved to 1-0.

Freshman Matt Jahn (Richmond, VA/Charlotte Rush) scored his first career goal for Cortland. Sophomore Ethan Homitz (Allison Park, PA/New Hampshire Monarchs) assisted on the goal. Freshman goalie Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) made 16 saves in his collegiate debut.

Junior Matt Muzyka (Cheshire, CT/Connecticut Oilers) also netted a goal for Skidmore. Senior John Litscher (Haymarket, VA/Trinity-Pawling), junior Brandon Borges (Providence, RI/South Shore Kings) and sophomores Austin Rook (Shrewsbury, MA/South Shore Kings) and Reid Russell (Napanee, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) each recorded an assist. Senior goalie Brandon Kasel (Ithaca/Syracuse Stars) turned aside 24 shots.

Muzyka gave the Thoroughbreds the lead 6:29 into the game, scoring with a wrist shot from the left circle that went in off the pipe. Jahn tied the game at 18:26 when he scored on a rebound after Homitz stole the puck just inside the blue line.

The Red Dragons killed off 1:50 of a two-man advantage for Skidmore in the second period to keep the game tied at 1-1 heading into the final 20 minutes. Wolf scored the game winner with a one-time shot from deep on the left side. Cortland pulled Durante in the closing minute and nearly tied the game, but Kasel made a sprawling save on a chance by junior Louis DiMatteo (Nobleton, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks) just before the final horn.
