SUNY New Paltz Swimming TCNJ Meet Recap

(RESULTS) Ewing, NJ -- The State University of New York at New Paltz swimming team had several season best times at The College of New Jersey Invitational Dec. 6-8.

In the first event of the day, Hawks sophomore Ethan Bonney swam a season best 4, minutes 50.77 seconds, which propelled him to B finals and extended his State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) leading 500-yard freestyle time. 

SUNY New Paltz also had several big performances in the 200-yard individual medley, sending a combined six swimmers to finals on the men's and women's sides. From the women's side, freshman Kelly Donlevy swam a personal best time of 2:14.20, which seeded her third overall during the night session. Senior Samantha Woll and freshman Delilah Griger also secured spots in the event finals and swam season best times. Woll finished in 2:19.92 and Griger in 2:21.62. All of the women moved up at least a spot in the finals with Donlevy coming in second overall. The men had several strong performances in the 200-yard individual medley. Sophomore Jared Finn, freshmen Zac Brown and Owen Rowlands all finalled in the event. Rowlands placed seventh overall and swam a season best time of 2:03.11.

The Hawks had several solid relay performances to cap off the first day of competition. First, the women's 400-yard medley relay had a season best performance, as Woll led off with a split of 1:02.38 for the backstroke leg, junior Lindsay Kranitz swam second going a 1:08.07, Donlevy at third splitting a time of 59.11 and senior Chelsea Angulas finished it off with a time of 55.02. SUNY New Paltz came in at 4:04.58. The men had a season best 400-yard medley relay as well, finishing in 3:42.43. 

On day two, the men's breastrokers stepped up big time for the Hawks. Brown finalled with a time of 1:03.90 and came in 16th overall in the event, while Finn came in at 12th place after swimming a time of 1:02.71. Sophomore Luke Gamboli had a big swim for the men coming in fifth overall in the 100-yard butterfly and going a season best time of 53.01.

Finals on day two saw four women make it back in the 100-yard backstroke and score valuable points for the team. Delilah Griger came in 13th overall after swimming a season-best, 1:03.75 and finaling for the fourth time. Woll finished in 11th place finaling for her fourth time as well. Junior Tessa Griger added to her strong weekend going a 1:01.36, which is a new season best time for her. Senior Chelsea Anguals had a huge swim, going a 59.31 which earned her a second place overall finish.

Day three included plenty of tough performances as swimmers began to feel very fatigued after a long weekend. The women had similar success in the 200-yard backstroke as several swimmers stepped up and had some incredible performances. Sisters, Tessa and Delilah Griger A finalled and swam a lane apart from each other. Tessa Griger had a personal best time of 2:13.06 to bring her up to fourth place overall. Woll came in 10th overall in the 200-yard backstroke after swimming a season-best 2:15.63. Angulas had the Hawks' solo win of the weekend claiming first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.97.

The men sent four swimmers to finals in the 200-yard breaststroke as Brown, sophomore Akiva Garfield and junior Graham Cono all B finalled. Rowlands continued his dominant weekend as he finished seventh overall in the event swimming a season best time of 2:16.18. On the women's side, juniors Natalia Giunta and Kranitz swam some season best times in the women's 200-yard breaststroke. Kranitz earned herself fifth place with a 2:29.72, while Giunta placed 13th with a 2:48.46.

The sprint freestylers bounced back in the 100-yard freestyle event after nobody finaled in the 50-yard freestyle on day one. The women sent two swimmers to finals as Donlevy finished seventh overall, cruising to a personal best time of 54.90 and senior Sarah Crespo earned 16th place with a 57.19. Sophomores Finn and Mitch Chappell represented the men in finals, as Finn finished 12th with a season best time of 48.64 and Chappell finished 15th going a 49.62. 

"The team really showed their resilience both in attitude and results after an off start to the meet," said SUNY New Paltz coach Matthew Distler. "I was really proud of the way we carried ourselves, especially in the final session." 

The women's 400-free relay had a new season best time of 3:41.98 and came in third place overall. Woll led by going a 56.40 off a  flat start, followed by Crespo who split a time of 56.49. At third, Donlevy had the fastest split going a 54.46 and Angulas brought the relay home in a 54.63.

The men also had a season best 400 free relay time after going 3:16.88. Chappell started the relay off with a split of 50.04. Finn swam next going a blazing time of 47.69, junior Nolan West kept the momentum going as he split a 49.79 and senior Tim Stecher anchored the relay going a personal best split of 49.36.
