Cassie Special won at fifth singles and teamed with Tina Wertman for a win at third doubles
ALFRED, N.Y. - Cortland won all three doubles matches and picked up five of six singles contests to defeat host Alfred University, 8-1, in a non-league match.
The Red Dragons (2-3) took control early with an 8-3 win by
Mia Hayes (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and
Chloe Knapp (Jamestown) at first doubles, an 8-6 victory by
Isabella Arrigo (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) and
Rachel Sullivan (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) at second doubles, and an 8-4 win by
Cassie Special (Williamsville/Williamsville South) and
Tina Wertman (Rochester/Caledonia-Mumford) at third doubles.
In singles action, Hayes won 6-4, 6-2 at number one and Knapp won 7-5, 6-2 at number two. Arrigo posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at number three and Special won 6-1, 6-3 at number five.
Olivia Terry (Hampton Bays) registered the most convincing singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at number six. Alfred (4-3) earned its point at fourth singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win by Miranda Sakala.
Cortland returns to SUNYAC action with matches Friday at New Paltz and Saturday at Plattsburgh.
