SUNY New Paltz Women's Soccer Battles Through Double Overtime 1-1 Tie Against Brockport

| By:
Box Score Brockport, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team fought through a 110 minute, weather delayed game against The College at Brockport Saturday and came away with a 1-1 tie to sustain its first conference point in more than a year.

"I think there is a desire for something we talk about and that is next level," said Hawks coach Mike Eckberg. "I think today was a next level game for them. I think they would all recognize and all understand that. We still have a long way to go, and we just got to realize we got to put together a complete game."

Monika Morasse gave SUNY New Paltz (4-6-1 overall, 2-0-1 SUNYAC) the early lead four minutes into the game, but the Golden Eagles (6-2-2 overall, 1-1-1 SUNYAC) tied the score midway through the first half, as Sarah Covell put away a pass from Myriah Saar.Monika Morasse GIF

However, it was all the offense the game would see, as the Hawks defense withstood Brockport's attack throughout the match to hold the stalemate. The Golden Eagles out-shot SUNY New Paltz 28-13 in the game, including 13-4 in the first half and totaled 12 corners in the match.

Katelyn Cordero, who got the start in goal for the Hawks, held strong and finished with 10 saves off 11 shots faced.

"Certainly need to give credit to Katelyn Cordero. She had a fantastic game. She came up big in a lot of big moments and I felt like our back line did well," Eckberg said. "They recognized that they were trying to get services from the flank and get on the end of them. Brockport is a very physical, athletic team, so I think we realized we needed to challenge the 50-50's and do our best in trying to compete at the same level physically."

With the game tied after regulation there was thunder rolling in over A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field, causing a 30-minute weather delay. The Hawks overcame the pause in play, stayed loose and limited the Golden Eagles to just two shots in overtime.

"I mentioned to the girls that I thought they fought through the entire match and that was exciting," Eckberg said. "Certainly Brockport had really dangerous chances that they did not convert, but regardless I think our girls did a good job of continuing to sustain our attack."

The Hawks have a tough test in No. 8 SUNY Geneseo Saturday, but Eckberg is looking forward in seeing how his team can build off a gritty double overtime game against Brockport.

"I'm looking to see if they can respond to a compounding belief, in the sense that now they have a small victory in getting a point," he said. "What I'm looking forward to is that they've gotten some credit where credit is deserved. Now can that translate to another difficult match tomorrow with Geneseo? I think just having that belief in them is important because Geneseo is a top-notch team this year."
