Softball stumbles in game 1, rallies past Plattsburgh in game 2

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—After dropping a 7-4 loss to the host Cardinals in the early game, Buffalo State plated 12 runs on 11 hits to rally from two early deficits en route to a 12-5 victory in the second game to earn a SUNYAC split this afternoon.
 
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  Plattsburgh – 7, Buffalo State - 4
LOCATION: Cardinal Park - Plattsburgh, N.Y.
RECORDS: Plattsburgh (10-9/4-1), Buffalo State (14-11/5-4)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals halted the Bengals' six-game winning streak with the 7-4 win in the opener.
  • Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) was the lone Bengal with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 3 with a double, while Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
  • Chelsea Davis (Lancaster/Lancaster) also drove in a run, going 1 for 4.
  • Emma Richard (Grand Island/Grand Island) was charged the loss in the circle, allowing six hits and five runs (four earned) in two complete innings.
  • Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) pitching three innings of relief, surrendering two runs on five hits, before Castello retired the final three batters.
  • Plattsburgh plated four runs in the second inning that included a three-run home run to take the early lead. 
  • Castello's two-run double, followed by Davis's RBI single in the third cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Cardinal tacked on another run in the bottom of the frame.
  • Buffalo State cut the gap back to one, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Nichy (Depew/Depew) in the sixth, but the Cardinals responded again with two runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Bella Spadinger was 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Plattsburgh.
  • Hannah Fuerst earned the win, pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs.  Elliana Bowlen registered the save with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless, no-hit relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) paced the Bengals in the second game, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored.
  • Castello went for 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Davis finished 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs.
  • Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) and Laura Bagley (Clarence/Clarence) each also recorded a hit for the Bengals to go along with a combined two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Nichy added three runs scored while Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) finished 1 for 4 with a double.
  • Castello earned her second win of the weekend, giving up only four earned runs off nine hits in a complete seven innings of work.
  • Plattsburgh opened the scoring for the second-straight game with one run off three hits in the bottom of the first to take the early lead.
  • After Buffalo State even the score in the top of third off a throwing error by the catcher, the Cardinals reclaimed a 3-1 lead with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
  • The Bengals once again evened the score with a two-run top of the fifth but couldn't maintain its momentum as Plattsburgh plated two runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-3 lead.
  • Buffalo State opened the flood gates in the top of sixth with a four-run inning off one hit and a pair of Cardinal errors to give the Bengals the 7-5 lead.
  • After stalling the Plattsburgh in the bottom of the inning, the Bengals exploded for five runs on seven hits to extend its lead to 12-5.
  • The Cardinals failed to produce a run in the final inning as Buffalo State preserved the win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Haleigh Agans and Kaitlyn Preiss combined for five of the nine Plattsburgh hits.
  • Jennifer Groat started the game in the circle, giving up only two runs on three hits in five innings of work.
  • Elliana Bowlen was credited with the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Hannah Fuerst pitched the final 2/3 of the seventh and gave up two runs on four hits.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Nazareth on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.
