Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer grinds out 2-0 victory against New Paltz

Red Dragons clinch playoff spot

Another tough match up in the SUNYAC for the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team, as they grinded out another win today a 2-0 victory against Catskill Cup rival New Paltz.  The win for the Red Dragons, who moved up to No. 7 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, was its sixth straight.  The victory for Oneonta (10-1-1/6-1 SUNYAC) also clinched a playoff spot.

The Red Dragons were in control of this one from the opening whistle.  The final shots were 26-3 in favor of the hosts while also holding a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

"That's another tough win in the conference that's developing into one of the toughest around," stated Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "The seniors did well today, and once again Captain Kevin Hoff (LaGrange/Arlington) was the inspiration behind the win.  We have two conference matches on the road next weekend needing to win both to lock up a bye for the first round of the tournament."

Hoff netted the game-winner for the Red Dragons, who celebrated senior day today.  Hoff got his head on a service from freshman Roberto Ventura (Brentwood/Brentwood) on a corner kick to score his second of the year.  The helper for Ventura was his second of the year.

Ventura would score his 11th goal of the season in the 36th minute to give Oneonta a 2-0 lead.  Ventura has now scored in 10 of the 11 games he has played in his rookie season.

Junior keeper Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack) only needed to make one save today to pick up his sixth shutout of the season.  His counterpart, John Guzzo, had to make eight saves many of which were labeled for the back of the goal keeping the Hawks in the game.

Oneonta will travel to Morrisville tomorrow to face the Mustangs at 2pm.
