Baseball Drops Two To Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team drops to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the SUNYAC after losing two games to Cortland (11-6, 4-1) on Sunday at Wallace Field.

"Obviously not the outcome we were hoping for today," head coach Kris Doorey said. "First game was a good game. We had a couple of chance to add runs and didn't execute or get a break. Game two got away from us early. But again it started with a hit batter and a bunt. Our pitchers have to do better at commanding the strike zone and fielding their positions."

GAME ONE: Plattsburgh State 1, Cortland 8

The Cardinals defense held off the Red Dragons for the first two innings only allowing three hits out of nine at bats.

Cortland made moves in the third inning scoring four runs off of three singles.

Junior Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) scored the Cardinals lone run in the fifth off a single up the middle from sophomore Santino Ycaza (Mastic, N.Y. / Brentwood Sonderling).

The Red Dragons scored four more runs in the seventh off a walk, a two-run single and a fielder's choice.

Craft and senior Joe Deland (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) each were 2-for-4 at the plate.

Junior Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) pitched six innings and scattered eight hits, four runs, walked two and struck out two.

Junior Frank Finkbeiner (Stone Ridge, N.Y. / Rondout Valley) gave up three hits, four runs and walked one.

Senior Jacob Stein (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) pitched two innings and struck out two.

"Offensively we did some good things in the opener but couldn't get the big hit," said Doorey.

GAME TWO: Plattsburgh State 0, Cortland 11

The Red dragons picked up where they left off in game two, scoring five runs in the first inning off a grand slam and a home run.

They scored four more in the fourth off two singles, one double and a passed ball.

Two more doubles in the fifth gave Cortland their eleven runs.

Junior Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Dobbs Ferry), Craft and sophomore  Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) recorded all three of Plattsburgh States hits.

Junior Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) pitched four innings and scattered nine hits, nine runs, walked three and struck out one.

Junior PJ Weeks (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) pitched two innings and gave up four hits, two runs and struck out three.

"In the nightcap Cortland's pitcher Harrington did a great job of keeping our hitters off balance by pitching backwards," Doorey stated.

Plattsburgh State will finish their series against Cortland Monday at 1 p.m.

"Tomorrow is a new day and we have to find a way to steal a game from one of the best teams in the country."
