MAINE-ENDWELL, N.Y. -
Brian Nolan threw six shutout innings and the No. 23 Oswego State baseball team refused to let wintry conditions cool off their offense in a 13-2 rout of the Oneonta Red Dragons. Oswego extends their win streak to 11 and goes to 16-5 (8-1 SUNYAC) on the season while Oneonta falls to 7-16 (3-8).
Nolan (4-1) was the story of the game for Oswego as he allowed only two hits on the afternoon while striking out seven to earn his fourth win. With his effort, the junior takes over the team strikeout lead for the season with a total of 29 to date.
Fielding was critical in the contest as Oswego benefited from 10 Oneonta errors. In the first inning, freshman
Ryan Enos led off with a walk and both
Brandon Nicholson and
Mike Dellicarri reached on two of those errors. After a
John Barnes fielder's choice forced Enos out at home, designated hitter
Myles Kutscher reached on a third Red Dragons' error to plate both Nicholson and Dellicarri and advance Barnes to third. Left fielder
Kevin Hylas delivered a single to bring in Barnes and give Oswego a 3-0 lead after half and inning.
The Lakers added more runs in the second when catcher
Collin Thompson singled to lead off the inning. Enos reached on a fielder's choice that forced Thompson out at second. Nicholson walked to put two aboard and following a strikeout, Barnes singled to knock in Enos. Nicholson scored with a steal and an errant throw from the catcher that allowed Barnes to advance to second. Singles by Kutscher, Hylas, and
Josh Hoagland added another pair of runs to push Oswego out to an early 7-0 lead.
In the third, walks by Enos, Nicholson, and Dellicarri loaded the bases for Barnes. His second single of the contest brought home the eighth run for the Lakers but a double play stymied any further damage to the hosts.
Enos and senior
Robert Donnelly would record RBI-singles in the fourth inning to put Oswego up 11-0 and the game out of reach for the Red Dragons.Â
Nathan Boughton,
Patrick Gosney and
Matt Bowman pitched the final three innings to close out the contest.
The Lakers are back in action for a scheduled 4 p.m. home game on Tuesday against non-conference opponent St. John Fisher.
