Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Rochester, NY - The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team started off its SUNYAC play with a pair of games against Oswego State. The Hawks were unable to come out on top against the Lakers, but have a shot at redemption tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the final game of the series.

"I told the team that it's not about how start, it's about how you finish that matters," said head coach Arlan Freeman. "Even though we lost both games today, we had some small victories that we can carry over to our next game tomorrow."

Senior co-captain Conor Donachie got the start in the opening game and was able to pitch out of a jam with men on second and third and only one out. After escaping danger in the opening frame, it looked like SUNY New paltz was ready to answer right back with Jake Williams and Chris Moran reaching base safely. However, after a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position, the Hawks were unable to bring a run home.

The Hawks lone run from the first game came off a home run hit by sophomore catcher Zachary Warenius in the top of the eighth inning. Warenius finished 2-for-3 on the day while senior infielder Jake Williams also chipped in a hit. James Magnusson, Jeff Sarra, and Brian LoRusso all threw one scoreless inning of relief in the game.

The second game started off on a high note for SUNY New Paltz as senior outfielder Nick DePietro led off with a single up the middle, but once again the Hawks were unable to take advantage. Junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Votypka got through the first two innings unscathed, but allowed the Lakers to strike first in the third inning. The philosophy for SUNY New Paltz all season has been to punch back after getting hit, but the dominant pitching from Oswego State was able to keep the crafty Hawk offense off the bases for the majority of the game.

Chris Moran added the other hit for SUNY New Paltz while Votypka was able to throw five innings before handing the ball off to LoRusso who finished off the sixth inning without letting up a run.

"We need to get back to our style of baseball," said Freeman. "We need to fight, claw and compete for 27 outs tomorrow."

The game time for tomorrow was recently changed from a 12 p.m. start to a 1 p.m. start and the game will be held back at Oswego State. Be sure to follow @nphawks on Twitter and @newpaltzhawks on Instagram and Facebook for updates, highlights, videos, photos and more.
