The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Monday afternoon, losing 12-5 at Stockton University. The Hawks now boast a record of 3-1, while the Ospreys improve to 4-2.

Stockton jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but SUNY New Paltz responded with back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Emily Puciloski and senior attack Kayla Massena to tie the game.

The Ospreys then scored four-straight goals, but Hawks junior midfielder Ashley Seiter's goal, assisted by freshman attack Tara Bovich, at the 26:51 mark sent SUNY New Paltz into halftime trailing 6-3.

Less than one minute into the second half, Bovich scored her team-leading 19th goal of the season to make it a 6-4 game. She is now tied for second in the SUNYAC in goals, trailing only SUNY Cortland sophomore midfielder Lexie Meager who has 22.

Stockton rattled off five-straight goals to take a commanding 11-4 lead deep into the second half. Hawks freshman attack Amy Hofer notched her 10th goal of the season, but it was too little too late as the Ospreys eventually won the contest by a score of 12-5.

"We didn't take advantage of the opportunities we created in the first half," Hawks head coach Keith Detelj said. "Stockton did a very good job of not letting us gain momentum."

Seiter and SUNY New Paltz junior midfielder Rachael Purtell each collected four ground balls and caused three turnovers. In addition to her goal and assist, Bovich chipped in defensively with two caused turnovers. Hawks freshman midfielder Keydy Espinoza won four draw controls, while SUNY New Paltz freshman defender Megan Tornatore won three.

Despite the loss, Hawks sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Sheintul recorded a season-high 12 saves in net.

"Nicole Sheintul and our defense made some big stops to create opportunities for us to get back in the game," Detelj said. "Some of those opportunities fell short and it's a good learning experience for us to see that we need to capitalize when we need it most."

The Hawks will next travel to Roanoke College on March 24 for a 1 p.m. matchup against the Maroons. Roanoke currently holds a record of 3-3.
