Men's Lacrosse Falls in Double Overtime to Clarkson, 10-9

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Despite receiving a game-tying goal from senior midfielder Billy Moller (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) with 11 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team fell, 10-9, to non-conference Clarkson University in double overtime on Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field. Moller finished with a career-high four goals, two of which came in the fourth quarter.

With time winding down in regulation, the Cardinals were pressing in their offensive third. Junior attackman Jake Carroll (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) picked up the ball behind the goal on a restart and passed to senior attackman Ryan Hubbard (Aquebogue, N.Y./Riverhead) on the left wing. Hubbard sent a high pass up top to Moller, and Moller leaped to receive the feed and landed before scoring low inside the right post.

In the first overtime period, sophomore midfielder Kevin Litchauer (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) nearly netted the game-winner before time expired, but Clarkson's sophomore goalie Colin Holt turned the shot aside to force a second overtime period. Clarkson caused a turnover 1:30 into the second overtime, and with 2:54 left in the period, the Golden Knights called a timeout. After working the ball around, sophomore attackman Conor Bartlett eventually netted the game-winner with 1:49 left, scoring unassisted.

Plattsburgh State drops to 1-2 overall with the loss and next takes on Wheaton (Mass.) College on Saturday, March 10, at 1 p.m. at Saint Anthony's High School on Long Island. Clarkson rises to 2-0 overall with the win and next visits the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m. in its Liberty League opener.

Clarkson jumped out to a 3-0 lead, with junior attackman Marcus Lavarnway and sophomore attackman Pierce Currie giving the Golden Knights a 2-0 edge through one quarter of play and senior midfielder Mark Uhlig stretching the advantage to 3-0 47 seconds into the second quarter. Moller put the Cardinals on the board with 8:21 left in the second, cashing in on an assist from freshman attackman Connor Wolff (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), but Uhlig countered for Clarkson with a goal 3:21 later.

Moller kickstarted what wound up being a 4-0 run with 2:52 left in the second quarter, relying on an assist from junior attackman Jake Carroll (East Northport, N.Y./Northport), while Wolff connected with Litchauer for a goal with 30 seconds left before halftime. While Clarkson won the ensuing face-off, a missed shot by the Golden Knights that was scooped up by senior goalie Austin Graham (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) gave Plattsburgh State one last possession before the intermission. Graham lobbed a ball to junior defenseman Chris Rupp (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) in the midfield, and Rupp caught the ball in stride running down the field. Rupp entered the top of the box and ripped a shot into the back of the net just before the clock expired to tie the game at 4-all. It marked the first career goal for Rupp.

Senior midfielder Peter Ciacelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) scored his first career goal midway through the third quarter to hand the Cardinals their first lead of the game, but junior midfielder Shane Kilday and sophomore midfielder Tannor Cioffi tallied for Clarkson to give the home team a 6-5 edge heading into the final regulation period. Kilday earned an assist on Cioffi's goal.

Hubbard tied the game 1:19 into the fourth quarter on a pass from Carroll, while Moller scored unassisted nearly three minutes later to stake Plattsburgh State to a 7-6 cushion. Clarkson regained the lead following a pair of goals that were 1:01 apart. Sophomore defenseman Liam St. Croix connected with senior midfielder Sam Groves to tie the game with 8:14 left in regulation, while Kilday gave Clarkson the lead with an unassisted score.

Hubbard knotted the tally at 8-all with 2:19 left on the clock, but Bartlett delivered a crucial goal with 44 seconds remaining in regulation to stake the Golden Knights to a 9-8 lead. That set up the game-tying possession, which began with a face-off win by senior face-off specialist Travis Mauro (Northport, N.Y./Northport).

Both teams posted 35 shots, while Clarkson had a slight 33-31 edge in ground balls. In transition, Plattsburgh State went 17-for-22 on clears, while Clarkson went 14-for-17. Neither team was unable to capitalize with the extra-man advantage, with the Cardinals going 0-for-2 with the extra attacker and the Golden Knights going 0-for-3.

Beyond Moller, Hubbard posted three points on two goals and an assist, while Carroll and Wolff each recorded two assists. Defensively, sophomore defenseman Kyle Smith (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) scooped up five ground balls and caused two turnovers, while Rupp finished with two caused turnovers as well. At the X, Mauro went 9-for-22.

For Clarkson, Uhlig, Bartlett and Kilday each scored twice, while Kilday also had an assist. Uhlig and sophomore midfielder Ryan Gabriel both collected six ground balls, while sophomore defenseman Trevor Borchardt caused four turnovers. Gabriel paced the Golden Knights on face-offs with 13-for-22 performance.
