Saints escape Bears, 3-2

CANTON, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (10-6) rallied for a 3-2 victory over the SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (7-8) in the first round of the SLU-Canton Classic on Friday night. Bears senior captain Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) had a match and career-high 20 kills and junior defensive specialist Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) duplicated the feat with 21 digs.
 
The Saints started quickly with a 25-10 win in set one, but Potsdam answered with 25-22 and 26-24 wins over the next two frames. SLU then captured 25-22 and 15-11 victories to clinch the match. Senior captain Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) recorded eight kills and 13 digs. Freshman middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) totaled six kills and five blocks, while senior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) contributed four blocks. Junior captain Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had another big day with 43 assists and 16 digs.
 
Potsdam is back in action tomorrow at SLU against Cazenovia College at 1 p.m. The Bears then face Wells College at SUNY Canton at 3 p.m.
