Box Score Plattsburgh, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team dropped their opening SUNYAC match against SUNY Geneseo 27-25, 19-25, 13-25, 25-23, 7-15.

The Hawks got off to a slow start in the opening set and ended up trailing 22-17, but the Hawks were able to fight back and go on a 6-1 run and tie the match up at 23. Back to back kills from Maddie Van Pelt and Kerri Neville ending up sealing the first set for SUNY New Paltz 27-25.

After another slow start to begin the second set the Hawks found themselves trailing 19-9. The team attempted to fight back again, but it was too little too late this time and they fell 25-19.

A dominant third set by the Knights put the Hawks in a must-win situation for the fourth set.

Maddie Zwickl and Ruby Klein BlockJulie Greenspan got the momentum back for the Hawks early in the 4th set racking up four kills in the first 11 points to give SUNY New Paltz a 7-4 lead. The set continued to go back and forth the whole way and was going to come to the wire. At 23-23 the Hawks put up a big block two points in a row and took the fourth set from the knights 25-23.

SUNY New Paltz is no stranger to a fifth set as the Hawks have played in three five-set matches already this season. Unfortunately the momentum didn't swing the right for the Hawks and they fell to SUNY Geneseo 15-7 in the final set.

Maddie Zwickl put together a double-double performance for the Hawks and was just four kills short of a triple-double. Zwickl posted 42 assists, 13 digs, and 5 kills. Taylor Cimillo led the way offensively with 14 kills on 52 attempts while Greenspan wasn't far behind with 10 kills on 17 attempts for a .529 hitting percentage.

In addition to Zwickl recording double digit digs Veronica Matedero and Meredith Dignan put 16 and 17 digs, respectively. Neville recorded 5 total blocks in the match.

Head coach Matt Giufre was happy with the fight his team showed, but wants to see more offensive improvements moving forward as the team only hit .117 for the match.

"Geneseo was a tough opponent who executed offensively much better than we did," said Giufre. "We are making too many errors and costing ourselves too many points to always come back from. We showed great toughness battling back late in set 1 and coming back down two sets to one for a chance to take the match and I'm proud of our team for that."

SUNY New Paltz gets back on the court in SUNYAC pool play tomorrow as they match up against SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh State.

"We will come out tomorrow for two more tough matches and look for ways to be better offensively," said Giufre.
