Lakers Upset No. 15 Geneseo; O'Kane Scores 100th

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team upset nationally-ranked Geneseo 11-9 on Wednesday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. With the win, the Lakers and Knights both hold 4-2 marks in the conference. On the year, Geneseo – who is ranked No. 15 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) pool – falls to 11-2 while Oswego improves to 8-4.

Geneseo is the highest-ranked squad the Laker program has knocked off since shocking No. 9 Brockport, 13-12, in the regular-season finale in 2016. Senior Gemma O'Kane notched a milestone of her own, scoring a pair of goals, with the first signifying the 100th of her career.

The Knights led in the early portions of the game but Oswego kept it close. Trailing 3-1, Oswego rattled off six of the game's next seven goals to own a 7-4 lead at 28:23 of the second half.

In the first half with 2:02 remaining, a Toni Laneve goal from Teresa Shattuck gave the Lakers its first advantage of the game at 5-4. Geneseo would never tie or regain the lead the rest of the way. Brigid Regin added another goal with just 13 seconds left in the opening period to send Oswego to the break ahead, 6-4.

The second half played out to a 5-5 battle, but Oswego possessed two, three-goal margins to keep the Knights on their heels. Geneseo tried to counter with three goals in a seven-minute stretch, but Oswego dodged the blow and held the Knights to just two goals over the final 18 minutes.

Shattuck paced the Lakers on offense with five points on two goals and three assists. The junior also led the squad with three draw controls.

Also finishing with multiple points were Regin, Laneve and O'Kane. Regin scored the late first half goal to go along with a career-high three assists. Laneve found the back of the net three times for her three points and O'Kane had the aforementioned two goals.

In the defensive effort, Oswego caused 12 Geneseo turnovers. Four of those came from Danielle Walker, three from Montana Garrett and two from Zeina Akl. O'Kane, Seanna Laneve and goalie Angela Ponto each turned the Knights over once.

Ponto was solid in net for the Lakers, making 12 saves to keep the visitors nearly four goals below their season average.

The Lakers will look to carry the momentum into Saturday as they host another ranked team in No. 19 Cortland. Draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Laker Turf Stadium.
