Baseball downs Fredonia in doubleheader

Red Dragons offense scores double digits in both games

Fredonia, NY. The SUNY Oneonta baseball team exploded for 22 runs en route to a pair of victories over Fredonia State today. In game one of the doubleheader, the Red Dragons knocked the Blue Devils around for 12 runs to win 12-3, and, in game two, Oneonta put up 10 runs to win 10-2. With the two conference victories Oneonta moved to 5-9 in the conference. The Blue Devils fell to 2-7 in the SUNYAC and 11-10 overall. Both senior Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) and junior Takoda Sitar (Katonah/Somers) earned wins for Oneonta.

In game one, the Red Dragons sent out Sitar to duel in the seven inning game. The junior answered the call pitching four scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the fifth. In his second victory of the season Sitar fanned five out of the 21 batters he faced.

On the offensive side of the frame the Red Dragons scored 12 runs off of 10 hits. Leading the charge for Oneonta was sophomore shortstop James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East). He had three hits, scored three runs while driving in a pair of runs. Junior Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) also had a multi-hit game with two hits including a double and a home run.

In the final game of the series, Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) took the mound for Oneonta. The senior gave the Red Dragons seven strong innings of work only allowing three hits and zero runs while fanning four hitters.

Offensively the Red Dragons picked up where they left off in the first game. Scoring 10 runs off of 10 hits led by designated hitter Brandon LaVenture (Schenectady/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) who had three hits and three runs batted in. The other player with a multi-hit game was second basemen Mike Graves (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) who was 2-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

The Red Dragons are back in action this Tuesday at Utica College starting at 4:00pm.
