Softball cruises past Wellesley, falls to Elmhurst

CLERMONT, Fla.—Buffalo State used a 10-run second inning to cruise past Wellesley 11-3 in six innings in the first game before falling to Elmhurst, 3-1 in the second game in Clermont, Fla.
 
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  Buffalo State – 11, Wellesley – 3 (6 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) finished 3 for 3 with three doubles, five RBIs and a run scored, while Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) tallied a pair of hits and three runs scored, while Chelsea Davis (Lancaster/Lancaster) went 1 for 3 with a two-RBI double in the top of the second.
  • Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) and Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) finished 1 for 3 and 1 for 2 from the dish respectively, with each tallying an RBI and run scored.
  • Laura Bagley (Clarence/Clarence) also recorded a hit and a run scored, while Alyssa Nichy (Depew/Depew) and Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) scored for the Bengals.
  • Castello earned the win on the mound for Buffalo State, giving up two runs on four hits in four and 2/3 innings. Nichy pitched one and 1/3 innings in relief.
  • After a scoreless first inning, Buffalo State started off the top of the second with three doubles, three singles and a pair of walks in the first eight batters to take a quick 6-0 lead, resulting in a pitching change by Wellesley.
  • The Bengals pushed their score to 7-0 on the very next at-bat and found themselves with the bases loaded with one out. O'Hern connected on a ground-rule double that cleared the bases to extend the lead to 10-0 after two innings.
  • Wellesley closed the gap to 10-3 as it hit a two-out double with bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Buffalo State finished off its scoring with an RBI-double in the top of the sixth that scored Benton to push the lead to 11-3.
  • Wellesley could not plate a run in the bottom of the inning as the game ended with an 11-3 score. 
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Gen Brittingham led Wellesley from the plate, going 1 for 2 with three RBIs and a walk.
  • Hayley Moniz was credited with the loss on the mound, giving up eight runs on seven hits in only one inning of action.
  • Caitlin Gordon pitched five innings of relief and gave up two earned runs on five hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Blujus paced the Bengals in the second game of the day, going 2 for 4 with a double.
  • Davis, Benton and McIntosh all finished 1 for 3 from the plate, with Benton adding an RBI and Davis tallying a run scored.
  • Marissa Hayes (N.Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) was credited with the loss on the mound for Buffalo State, giving up two run on six hits in five inning of work.
  • Emma Richard (Grand Island/Grand Island) started the game and gave up only one run on six hits in two innings of work.
  • Elmhurst struck first with a run off of four hits in the top of the second to take an early lead.
  • After three innings of being held scoreless, Buffalo State got a spark from a lead-off double by Davis, that was later scored on a groundout by Benton, to even the score.
  • The Blue Jays reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning and added an insurance marker in the top of the sixth to earn the win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Five Elmhurst players recorded two hits, including Mia Tran who finished with a pair of doubles.
  • Emily Despain earned the win for the Blue Jays, going four and 2/3 innings and giving up one run on three hits. Sydni Gizynski recorded the save by giving up no runs on two hits and two and 1/3 innings.
