Oneonta, NY. The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team placed first in the Dig Pink Invitational going 4-0 on the weekend. The Red Dragons took two matches on Friday afternoon beating Elmira in five sets and Bard College in a straight sets 3-0. The Red Dragons carried that momentum into the second day of the invitational as they did not concede a set beating both Hartwick and Baruch in straight sets. Seniors
Melissa Voyer (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and
Sara Feldman (Smithtown/Smithtown East) took home All-Tournament team honors for the Red Dragons.
The first match of the tournament required all five sets to decide a victor. The Red Dragons triumphed in the final set with a score of 18-16. Voyer led the Red Dragons with a team high 19 kills and sophomore
Lindsay Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) had 16 digs. Classmate
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) had a match high 59 assists, which is the most assists in a match in Red Dragon history. With the 59 assists she beat the prior record of 53 held by Thersa Kral of the 1997 team.
In the next match, the Red Dragons squared off against Bard College. In the straight set victory Oneonta had 36 kills including 10 from sophomore
Meghan Keyes (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills). In the match she hit .529 and also had a dig for a total of 10 points in the match.
Honoring their seniors in the opening match of the second day, the Red Dragons by beating Baruch in a straight set. Feldman had nine kills for the Red Dragons. Voyer led the team in kills (11), aces (5) and blocks (2) and
Justine Abbate (Massapequa/Massapequa) played in all three sets and had four digs.
In the last match of the tournament the Red Dragon were up against Hartwick, with the tournament title on the line. The Red Dragons answered the call by sweeping the Hawks to take first place in the Dig Pink. In the match, Feldman led Oneonta with 12 kills. Fowler had 38 assists and 12 digs.
On the weekend, Fowler earned her 1000
th assist of the year. She now has 1062 assists on the year.
The Red Dragons next match is against the New Paltz on Tuesday October 31
st in a SUNYAC playoff game. In the last match up, the Hawks beat the Red Dragons 3-1. The winner of the match goes on to play against Brockport or Fredonia in the semifinals.
