Brockport Wins Overtime Thiller Against Morrisville, 3-2

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team won a thrilling overtime victory over Morrisville State, Saturday evening in their last State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match of the season, 3-2.  The Golden Eagles move to 3-11 (1-5 SUNYAC) on the year, where the Mustangs fall to 3-10 (0-6).

Brockport fell behind in the first half when the Mustangs netted the first goal of the game in the 28th minute.  Brockport attempted to tie the game on a penalty corner opportunity before the first half ended, but Abby Meagher's shot was stopped on a defensive save.

Both teams battled it out in the second half, but it was Morrisville who was able to convert a shot in the 56th minute to take a 2-0 lead. Even though Brockport was down, they were not out of the game, as they were an offensive force in the final eight minutes of the contest. The Golden Eagles ripped five shots on target before Maria Morgenthaler was able to find the back of the net in the 65th minute to trail 2-1. Minutes later, the Golden Eagles were awarded a last chance penalty corner opportunity. Morganthaler passed the ball into play, but it was Katie Ziemba who fired off shot past the keeper to tie the game up at 2-2, as both teams headed into overtime.

Brockport struggled early, as the Mustangs tallied two shots, but the two-time SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week, Sarah Beam, stopped all opportunities they had. In the 77th minute, The Golden Eagles had a fast break opportunity where Ziemba received a break away pass from Morgenthaler, in which she scored on to win the game by a final score of 3-2.

"We knew we needed to pick up our intensity and level of play to come back from a two-goal deficit," head coach Krista Archambeau said. "We had opportunities to score all game, but finally got the job done when we needed to. Our momentum stayed up from the first goal, and carried us through overtime."

The Brockport offense was led by Ziemba who finished the game with two goals, and Morgenthaler who had a goal and two assists.

Beam finished the match with 12 saves between the pipes.

Brockport will be back in action this Tuesday October 17th when they face Nazareth College, with the game set to start at 5 p.m.
