Cortland Tennis Completes Long Day With Come-From-Behind Win vs. Plattsburgh

Mia Hayes won 6-2, 6-1 at first singles vs. Plattsburgh
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Cortland rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to defeat host Plattsburgh, 5-2, in a SUNYAC East women's tennis match Saturday night. Earlier in the day, the Red Dragons lost 5-0 to New Paltz, also at Plattsburgh. Cortland is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in divisional play.

Cortland clinched the win over Plattsburgh when freshman Isabella Arrigo (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at fourth singles. With the Red Dragons up 5-2 at that point, the remaining two singles matches - both which Plattsburgh was leading - were not finished.

Arrigo and freshman Tina Wertman (Rochester/Caledonia-Mumford) won 8-6 at third doubles. Plattsburgh earned the other two doubles points as Kelci Henn and Sierra Barrett won 9-7 over Mia Hayes (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and Nikaylah Williams (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills West), while Shari Forman and Katie Kratovil posted an 8-4 win over Kelliann Camp (Sayville) and Cassie Special (Williamsville/Williamsville South).

Cortland, however, won all four singles matches. In addition to Arrigo's win at number four, Hayes was a 6-2, 6-1 winner on the first flight, Special won 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles, and Olivia Terry (Hampton Bays) blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at sixth singles.

Cortland's match with New Paltz, which was postponed by rain Friday, started Saturday morning about 10 hours prior to the Cortland-Plattsburgh match. New Paltz won all three doubles matches - the top two flights by 8-3 scores and third doubles by an 8-0 count - and clinched the win with straight-set decisions at fifth and sixth singles. Courtney Koran was a double winner for the Hawks with wins at fifth singles and second doubles.

Cortland returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Hartwick in a 4 p.m. non-league match.
