Clarkson tops Bears in crosstown rivalry

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (1-0) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (1-2) 15-4 on Thursday afternoon. Junior captain Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) continued her hot streak for Potsdam with two goals and an assist.
 
Jayd Baytos put the Golden Knights in front just 28 seconds into the contest with the first of her game-high four goals, but senior captain Morgan Cook (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) tied the game with an assist from O'Connor just 1:03 later. Clarkson's Abby Collins and Taylor Collins netted the next two to make it 3-1 at 25:47. O'Connor closed the gap with a free-position goal at 24:29, but the Golden Knights pulled away for a 6-2 advantage at 22:39 on three straight, including a goal each from Baytos and Taylor Collins. Sophomore attack Ashley Burrowes (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) connected with senior captain Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) at 15:46 to make it 6-3. Clarkson answered with a 9-0 run that carried into the second half. Thanks to another goal each from Baytos and Abby Collins, the Golden Knights led 8-3 at the break.
 
Clarkson scored the first seven of the second half to seize control of the contest with a 15-3 advantage with 10:01 to play. Taylor Collins and Celia Fitzgerald each scored twice along with another tally from Baytos during the stretch. O'Connor scored the contest's final goal with 3:44 remaining to close out the 15-4 decision.
 
Junior goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) had another strong day with 18 saves. Clarkson goalies Carolynn Pechman, Emily Fischer and Samantha Gladd finished with three, one and three saves, respectively.
 
The Bears are back to host Utica College in their home opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
