Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball goes wire-to-wire against Brockport

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team led wire-to-wire today in defeating the visiting Brockport Golden Eagles 52-41.  The Red Dragons used a balanced attack with nine players registering at least two points helping to push its record to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC.  The loss for Brockport dropped them to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

With the score tied at six apiece with just over four minutes remaining in the opening quarter, the Red Dragons asserted itself scoring seven unanswered to grab control of the game.  Oneonta finished the first quarter leading 15-9 and never were really challenged again by the Golden Eagles.  Sophomore Shelby Benjamin (Norwich/Norwich) came off the bench to ignite Oneonta scoring all seven of the points during its outburst.

A 9-0 run early in the second quarter pushed Oneonta's lead to double digits at 24-11.  Freshman Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) dropped in a pair of baskets to lead the spurt.  The Red Dragons scored 13 points in the quarter and took a 28-17 lead into halftime.

The Golden Eagles had the better third quarter outscoring Oneonta 11-8 to cut its deficit to single digits entering the final quarter.  Schyler Laux led the charge with a pair of three-pointers.

Oneonta put the game out of reach with an 8-3 run late in the game pushing its lead to as many as 14 points twice in the last 1:05.

Junior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) led Oneonta today with 11 points to go with six boards.  The Red Dragons' bench was solid today outscoring Brockport's reserves 23-12.  Oneonta also had a huge advantage of 32-14 in the paint.

Oneonta will be on the road this coming Tuesday when they travel to Oswego for another SUNYAC contest beginning at 5:30pm.
