Szablinski Earns Her 100th Victory in SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey's Big 5-3 Win Over SUNY Oswego

| By:
Box Score Oswego, NY - State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey head coach Shanna Szablinski earned her 100th career victory after a crucial 5-3 win over conference foe Oswego State Friday afternoon.

Szablinski has guided the Hawks to four SUNYAC titles and three NCAA Tournament wins since she joined the program back in 2009. She won SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors from 2011-13, including being named the Synapse Sports NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2012.

Despite her accomplishments, Szablinski was very humble about reaching the milestone.

"I've been very blessed to have a strong staff and a lot of great players that have taken the chance and decided to play at New Paltz," she said. "Hats off to them. I'm just the one that has the opportunity to coach them."

The Hawks, who improve to 5-9 overall and 4-1 in conference play, hope to give Szablinski her 101st win Saturday when they play their final regular season SUNYAC match against SUNY Cortland. The Red Dragons, who defeated SUNY Onenota today 2-1, also boast a conference mark of 4-1, making for a very important game that will determine seeding in the SUNYAC Tournament.

"Cortland is having an excellent season," Szablinski said. "They're a strong and fast team. It's going to be important that we support each other. Defensively, we need to deny the ball and be able to stop their forwards and midfielders. It's going to take a total team effort tomorrow."

With the loss, the Lakers drop to 5-7 overall and have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Freshman Carly Croteau opened the scoring in the fifth minute with her fifth goal of the season off an assist from senior Justine O'Reilly.

SUNY New Paltz doubled its lead at the 24:06 mark when freshman Sawyer Kessler took advantage of the goalkeeper being down to notch the first goal of her collegiate career. O'Reilly then scored off a penalty corner from junior Samantha Ackerman in the 33rd minute to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead before halftime.

In the second half, Croteau notched her second goal of the match at the 47:13 mark to make it a 4-0 game. This marks the first multi-goal game of her collegiate career.

However, the Lakers would not go down without a fight. Oswego called a timeout after Croteau's goal, and they then rattled off three goals in less than seven minutes to draw within one.

"Oswego came and played hard," Szablinski said. "There were times they were beating us to the ball and they were finding success. They made it difficult for us in the second half."

But, senior Megan Gangewere, who recorded 10 saves on the day, held strong in the cage and did not allow another Lakers goal.

O'Reilly gave the Hawks some insurance in the 68th minute with her second goal of the game off another corner from Ackerman. Sophomore Kaitlyn Gunter also had an assist on the play.

SUNY New Paltz narrowly out-shot Oswego 19-18, while the Lakers held a 14-10 advantage in penalty corners.
