Cortland Drops 86-73 Decision at Brockport After Golden Eagles' Late Run

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Brockport outscored Cortland 17-7 over the final five minutes and the Golden Eagles defeated the visiting Red Dragons, 86-73, in a SUNYAC men's basketball contest.

Cortland (2-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) fell despite a second straight stellar outing from sophomore forward Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson). He finished with 29 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks while playing all 40 minutes, one day after posting 27 points and 17 rebounds in a win at Geneseo.

Jake DiSanto (Victor) recorded career highs of five 3-pointers and 16 points. He was 5-for-8 from the arc. Ben Walters (Lockport/Starpoint) finished with 11 points and Eric Edwards (Binghamton) added 10 points and five rebounds in 25 minutes before fouling out with 5:37 remaining. Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) set a career high with 11 assists.

Tyler Collins led four double-figure scorers for Brockport (5-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) with 25 points. He hit 7-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-7 3-pointers, and added five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Justin Summers finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, Jahidi Wallace had 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists, and Danny Ashley ended with 10 points, six assists and three steals.

The first half featured 12 lead changes, and neither team led by more than five until Brandon Kennedy-Gay hit a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles a 38-30 lead. Cortland closed to within five at halftime after a Grunder 3-point play with 38 seconds remaining.

Brockport extended its lead to 12 less than four minutes into the second half at 51-39, but a 10-2 Cortland run that featured two DiSanto 3-pointers but the deficit to four just about three minutes later. The Red Dragons eventually tied the game at 57 on a DiSanto free throw with 9:49 left and again at 59 on two Walters free throws with 8:29 remaining.

Cortland was still within three at 69-66 after Grunder sank two foul shots with 5:16 left. At that point Brockport went on a decisive 10-0 run, with six of the points coming from Collins, and the hosts led 79-66 with 2:45 on the clock. The margin remained in double figures.

Cortland shot 44 percent from the field overall and 27 percent (6-for-22) from 3-point range. The Red Dragons were 79 percent (15-for-19) from the charity stripe. Brockport ended the game at 43 percent overall and 33 percent (7-for-21) from long distance, and the Golden Eagles made 21-of-29 free throws (72 percent). The Golden Eagles held advantages in both points off of turnovers (25-11) and second-chance points (18-5). Cortland finished with 16 turnovers compared to Brockport's 10.

Cortland will travel to Miami, Fla., for the HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout Dec. 15 and 17. The Red Dragons will face Eastern University of Pennsylvania on the 15th and Gwynedd Mercy of Pennsylvania on the 17th.
