AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – Despite taking a three-run lead in the fifth inning the Plattsburgh State baseball team (7-18) suffered a 13-8 loss to Union College (18-5) Wednesday evening at Shuttleworth Park.
Sophomore
Alex Follmer (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) went 2-for-2 at the plate with one run and one RBI.
Union scored their first run with a double down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning.
They started the bottom of the second with a home run to left field and scored off a balk and a sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 lead.
Freshman
Tom Bowe (Homer, Alaska / Homer) singled to right field to plate Follmer in the top of the third.
Junior
Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Dobbs Ferry) scored off an error and freshman
Erik Matz (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) scored off a walk in the top of the fourth to come within one run of the lead.
Matz hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth to plate Bowe and freshman
Jack Bermingham (Monroe, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) to take a one run edge.
Freshman
Anthony Maag (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) doubled to left field to score Cipriano and Matz scored on an error to give the Cardinals a three-run advantage.
Union hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth and recorded four runs in the bottom of the sixth off two doubles and a two-run homer to take the lead back 10-7.
Junior
Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) singled up the middle to score sophomore
Santino Ycaza (Mastic, N.Y. / Brentwood Sonderling) in the top of the seventh for the Cardinals eighth run.
Union hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh and had a one-run single in the bottom of the eighth.
Unions pitching staff held off Plattsburgh State and they achieved the comeback and took the five-run win.
Freshman
Chase Blazak (Pelham, N.H. / Bishop Guertin) pitched three innings and scattered four hits, four runs, walked two and struck out one.
Sophomore
Jason Fingerhut (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) pitched two innings and gave up two hits, two runs and walked three.
Junior
Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) pitched one inning and dispersed four hits, four runs, walked one and struck out one.
Sophomore
Justin Adams (Valhalla, N.Y. / Westlake) pitched .2 innings and scattered two hits, two runs, walked three and struck out one.
Sophomore
Alec Fauvell (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) pitched 1.1 innings and gave up one hit, one run, walked two and struck out one.
Plattsburgh State is home Saturday, April 21 for a doubleheader against SUNY Oswego starting at noon.
