Brockports Comeback Falls Short Against Montclair State, 14-12

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team fell short against Montclair State Sunday afternoon, losing by a final score of 14-12. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-5 on the year, where the Red Hawks move to 4-3.
 
Brockport started hot as Heather Conklin struck first on a free position attempt to take an early 1-0 advantage. Conklin doubled up minutes later when she deked out a defender and beat the goalie high to pull away 2-0.  After a Montclair goal, Conklin answered with her third goal of the day on the free position to set the score at 3-1. The Green and Gold stumbled midway through the half as the Red Hawks scored four straight goals to pull ahead 5-4. The Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead 6-5 after a pair of goals from Sara Grapevine and Conklin on the free position. Montclair netted two last minute goals to hold a 7-6 advantage heading into halftime.
 
The Brockport offense dominated the start of the second half scoring back-to-back goals less than a minute into the action, to take an 8-7 lead. Conklin cashed in first as she beat her defender to rip her shot into the back of the net, then Andrea Zlinsky responded with a goal on a free position attempt. The Golden Eagles struggle to maintain the lead as the Red Hawks notched three straight goals to pull away 10-8. After a Samantha Dooling goal, Montclair answered by scoring four straight to post a 14-9 advantage. Brockport battled back scoring three consecutive goals from Zlinsky, Taylor Thomas, and Jillian Babinsky, but could not manage to complete the comeback losing 14-12.
 
Conklin led the Brockport offense with five goals, three on the free position and one assist. Babinsky led the defense with two caused turnovers, two groundballs, and 10 draw controls.
 
Sarah Brown played the full 60 minutes in the cage today and ended with seven saves.
 
The Golden Eagles stay on the road as they face St. John Fisher this Wednesday March 28, with the time slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
