Field Hockey Unnests Golden Eagles, 6-0

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) recorded two goals and an assist and four other Cortland players scored once apiece as the Red Dragons blanked host Brockport, 6-0, in a SUNYAC field hockey contest.

Cortland (6-3, 2-1 SUNYAC) outshot the Golden Eagles, 28-1, and earned 11 penalty corners to Brockport's two. The Red Dragons took a 3-0 halftime lead, then returned from a weather delay at halftime to add three second-half tallies.

Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the game when she collected a rebound off her initial shot and lofted a shot into the cage. Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute off an assist from Welsh during a penalty corner, and Welsh scored less than a minute later unassisted.

Welsh netted her second goal of the game and fifth of the season, assisted by Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), on a penalty corner play 6:29 into the second half. Megan O'Brien (Carmel) increased the lead to 5-0 with 19:46 remaining when she tapped in a rebound, and Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) closed the scoring with eight minutes left with her fifth goal of the fall.

Cortland goalies Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) and Marissa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) combined for the shutout, although neither had to make a save. Reinoehl played the first 60 minutes and D'Amico the final 10. Brockport starting goalie Sarah Beam registered 14 saves in 62 minutes, while Adriana DeDie stopped two shots and did not allow any goals the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles are now 2-9 overall and 0-3 in the SUNYAC.

Cortland will play a non-league game at Ithaca Sunday at 1 p.m.
