MAINE-ENDWELL, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team won a pair of games on Saturday afternoon over conference-foe Oneonta to push their win streak to 10 games and improve their record to 15-5 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers won the first nine-inning affair by a score of 10-3 and the second game, 6-1, in seven innings. Oneonta falls to 7-15 and 3-7 in conference action.
Game 1
Senior center fielder
John Barnes smacked a two-run homerun in the first inning and reached base in four-of-five trips to the plate in helping the Lakers to the victory.
Oswego got on the board in the first when Barnes brought home freshman
Ryan Enos with his third homerun of the season. Oneonta tied it up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
The Lakers answered back in the third when Enos walked and advanced to third on a
Brandon Nicholson double down the left field line. After a flyout, Barnes would single to plate Enos and advance Nicholson to third. Senior
Eli Holton drove in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly to give Oswego a 4-2 lead.
In the fourth inning, Oswego added another run on a
Myles Kutscher single and
Zach Whelan double that allowed Kutscher to score. The team pushed the lead to 7-2 in the top of the fifth when Nicholson and
Mike Dellicarri singled to lead off. They advanced on a Barnes flyout and Holton intentionally walked to load the bases. Kutscher grounded into a fielder's choice, but an error on the play allowed Dellicarri and Holton to score.
Reston Pettit (2-0) picked up his second win of the season while going seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out eight. Pettit now sports a 2.03 season earned run average and leads the team with 27 strikeouts. Senior
Mike Abrams and freshman
Ben Geiger pitched two innings in relief and allowed no Red Dragon runs to score.
Game 2
The Lakers continued their strong play in the early innings by loading the bases in the top of the first with singles from Enos and Nicholson and a walk from Dellicarri. A pair of strikeouts and a flyout thwarted the scoring threat. In the top of the second, Oneonta wasn't as fortunate.
Lukas Olsson led off with a walk and advanced to third on a two-out double by Enos. Nicholson put Oswego in front 2-0 with a double of his own in the next at-bat.
The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth when Dellicarri singled with one out and stole second. Holton doubled to bring him home and took third during the next at-bat with a steal of his own. After Kutscher reached on a hit-by-pitch, Olsson singled to push Oswego out to a 4-0 lead.
Whelan and Enos plated a pair of insurance runs in the next inning when both reached and used aggressive baserunning to force Oneonta into throwing errors. Oneonta scored one in the bottom of the sixth to conclude the scoring.
On the mound,
Robert Donnelly (4-0) was stellar again for the Lakers. The senior allowed only one run, his first since a March 11 game against Wartburg, while striking out six during the complete game and lowering his earned run average to 1.69 on the season.
The baseball team is back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they return to Maine-Endwell High School to complete the three-game set with the Red Dragons.
