Brockport Falls In Extra Innings To New Paltz

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team dropped a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon. The Green and Gold drop to 11-11 (1-5 SUNYAC) on the season, while the Hawks improve to 13-14-1 (6-4).

Game 1: Loss, 5-2
The action got started bright and early for today's 10 a.m. start, as New Paltz used a three hit first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Julia Palopoli settled down quickly however, giving up just two hits in the next three innings without allowing another runner to cross the plate.

Brockport got the two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, using a three hit inning to knot the score up at 2-2. Meghan Cullen got the rally started with a one out single down the right field line, and was scored in the next at-bat when Casey Danko ripped a double into the right centerfield gap, just out of the reach of the diving centerfielder. After she advanced to third on a single from Jessica Koneski, she crossed the plate on an RBI groundout from Lindsay Wachna, tying things up.

The Hawks responded in the top of the fifth, compiling a four-hit inning that allowed them to re-gain the lead at 5-2. Despite a two hit inning of their own in the bottom half, the Green and Gold were not get back on the board, dropping the first game of the doubleheader.

Six different Golden Eagles recorded hits in the game, while Penny Lenard reached base safe twice with a single and a walk.

Game 2: Loss, 8-6 (10 innings)
The back half of the doubleheader was a thriller throughout, as both starting pitchers shined, each going the full 10 innings in the circle. Becky Knorr took the loss despite a strong outing that saw her limit the Hawks to three runs through the first nine innings of play.

After New Paltz took another early 3-0 lead, Brockport once again used a fourth inning rally to fight their way back. After loading the bases with nobody out, Alison Missavage got the team on the board when she ripped a line drive that was caught by the centerfielder, but was deep enough to score Wachna from third. Two batters later, Lenard worked a 3-2 count before coming through with a clutch two RBI single with two outs, tying the game at 3-3.

Both pitchers threw clean innings for the remainder of regulation, forcing extra innings. After two more scoreless innings, New Paltz finally came through in the top of the fifth, exploding for five runs to take a commanding 8-3 lead. The Golden Eagles nearly responded in the bottom half with three runs of their own, but came up just short, falling by a final score of 8-6.

Karleigh Eaton led the lineup with three hits in the game, while Cullen, Wachna, Missavage, and Hubbard all had multi-hit games as well.
