Cortland Surges in Second Half for 17-6 Win at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Cortland scored eight straight goals in the second half to extend a four-goal lead to 12 and the Red Dragons defeated host Union, 17-6, in a non-league women's lacrosse contest.

Cortland (1-1) was led by Lexie Meager's (Syracuse/West Genesee) four goals and three assists. Brie Yonge (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) tallied three goals and two assists, Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) finished with three goals and one assist and Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) scored twice.

Paige Potter (Cortland) started in goal for the Red Dragons and made five saves in the first half. Annie Casey (Bay Shore) recorded six saves and allowed two goals in the second half.

Lindsay Gerrato scored two goals to lead Union (1-1). Ellie Taney registered eight saves.

Cortland held a 3-2 lead before rattling off five straight goals from the 22:30 mark to the 8:48 point in the first half to take an 8-2 lead. Katie Goodrich (Jordan/Jordan-Elbridge) started the run with a free position goal, followed by tallies from Meager, Lorenzen, Yonge and Keech. Union closed to within 8-4 on goals from Sydney McPartlon and Gerrato in the final 6:20 of the half.

The teams traded goals in the first two minutes of the second half before Cortland went on its decisive run. Meager scored with 26:18 left, followed by her younger sister, Kiki Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee), about four minutes later. Goals from Lorenzen and Yonge pushed the lead to 13-5 with 15:55 left, and Rachel Janis (Mattituck) scored with 13:01 remaining to extend the lead to nine. Keech, Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) finished the run over the next nine minutes.

Cortland returns to action in just over a week on Wednesday, March 11, when the Red Dragons travel to St. John Fisher.
