Golden Eagles Fall To Herons In Non-Conference Battle

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team dropped a tightly contested contest against William Smith College on Tuesday evening by a final score of 72-61. With the loss, the Golden Eagles drop to 2-5 on the season, where the Herons improve to 3-2.

Brockport got off to a hot start in the opening quarter of play, scoring the first five points of the game off a three-pointer from Bailey Pratt and a Schyler Laux jumper. William Smith fought back to tie the game at 7-7 before the teams went back and forth for the rest of the quarter. Lindsay Johnson saw a layup sink with 0:12 seconds left, but a desperation three fell for the Heron's Emma Gallagher as time expired, giving them an 18-14 lead going into the first break.

The second quarter of play was tightly contested again, as Pratt continued to heat up from behind the arc, helping Brockport balance out the Herons solid play in the post. Julianna Taylor's jumper in the paint with 0:17 seconds left put the Green and Gold within striking distance, trailing by five at the half.

Laux, Lindsay Johnson, and Emily Nestler each made a bucket early in the third to put Brockport within three, but the Herons were able to control the remainder of the frame, outscoring the Golden Eagles 19-4 to carry an 18-point lead into the final quarter of play.

Brockport started a full court press to begin the fourth quarter, and it worked to their advantage, as they were able to cut the deficit in half by the 4:43 mark. They got to within striking distance after a Laux three had them trailing by just seven with 1:54 to play, but William Smith was solid on their free throw chances down the stretch, and held on for the win.

Nestler had another strong outing today, leading Brockport with 17 points and six rebounds while dishing out four assists. Pratt was also solid, contributing 13 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc.

Laux and Zaria McCullough brought down five boards apiece, while Lindsay Johnson snatched four to go with her eight points.

The women's basketball team will host another set of games this weekend when they welcome Plattsburgh State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before a matchup with SUNY Potsdam Saturday at 1 p.m.
