Softball Splits Doubleheader Behind Solid Pitching Performances

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team picked up a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win against SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with a game two victory. Brockport is now 13-17 (3-11 SUNYAC) on the season, while the Red Dragons move to 17-11 (9-5).

Game 1: Loss, 3-1
After pitching a five inning shutout yesterday afternoon, Becky Knorr went the distance again in the opening game of today's doubleheader. The senior allowed just two earned runs in her seven innings of work, striking out three Red Dragon batters without allowing a walk.

The Golden Eagles held a lead for a majority of this game, scoring a run in the bottom of the second and holding that lead all the way until the top of the sixth. After Lindsay Wachna led off the inning with a walk and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Karleigh Eaton, Alison Missavage drove her in with a line drive single over the head of the shortstop, giving the Green and Gold the lead.

The base hit was one of two for Missavage in the game, as the sophomore would add a team-leading second hit in the bottom of the fifth. Morgan Flamholtz and Shelby Perry also recorded hits, but the Oneonta pitcher went the distance, limiting the Golden Eagles to just one run and picking up the win after a three run sixth from the Red Dragon offense.

Brockport nearly tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, threatening with runners on second and third with two outs in the inning. Shelby Perry found a pitch to hit and ripped a fastball up the middle, but a quick reaction from the Oneonta pitcher found the ball right in her glove, ending the game.

Game 2: Win, 4-2
The Golden Eagles would need to come from behind in game two, as Oneonta picked up a run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. They got it right back in the bottom half, however, when Alexis Ross led off the inning with a walk and was driven home two batters later on an RBI single by Casey Danko.

They'd take their first lead of the game two innings later on a two out rally when Ross walked and then stole second to get into scoring position. Meghan Cullen was up next, and ripped an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Ross.

Julia Palopoli settled down after allowing the first inning run, and held the Red Dragons off the board for the next four innings, allowing the Green and Gold to take a three run lead after another two runs in the fifth. She ended up allowing one more in the top of the sixth, but shut Oneonta down in the seventh, securing the win.

The victory was her sixth of the season, as the freshman now moves to 6-3 on the year. She allowed just two runs, and struck out five in her seven innings of work.

Danko led the team with two hits and two RBI, while Cullen added an RBI with a base hit and a walk. Kacie Hubbard, Wachna, Eaton, and Flamholtz all recorded hits in the game as well.

Brockport will be back in action either tomorrow or Thursday at home when they host Buffalo State for a SUNYAC series.
