OT goal by Hayes boosts Devils over Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Aaron Hayes (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored five minutes into overtime and Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind.) made eight saves as Fredonia blanked Potsdam, 1-0, in SUNYAC men's soccer.

Matt Casey (Williamsville, N.Y.) began the game-winning play with a direct kick which landed between Hayes and a Bears defender. Hayes deflected the ball in at 4:32 of the extra session for his second goal of the season, his first game-winner. It was the seventh overtime game of the season for Fredonia, five resulting in wins and one in a tie.

As a result of the win, the Blue Devils (8-5-1 overall, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) moved into a tie with Geneseo for the sixth and final playoff berth. Each team has three conference games remaining, with Fredonia moving on to Plattsburgh to take on the Cardinals at 1 p.m. Saturday before closing out the season with two games at home next weekend.

Potsdam outshot Fredonia 11-1 in the first half Friday and the pressure resulted in a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Just over six minutes in, Potsdam's Ritchie Hetherington hit a post with a shot. The Blue Devils didn't get a shot on goal until the 41st minute. Bears' goalie Jakeb Mitchell made the save while Bentham turned aside four shots to keep the game scoreless at the half.

The play was much more balanced in the second half. The Bears tested Bentham four more times in the final period, including a chance with 10 seconds remaining, but he continued to frustrate Potsdam. Mitchell stopped two more shots in the second half for the Bears and the game remained even after 90 minutes.

In the overtime, Jorge Ferrer fired Potsdam's last shot just wide 48 seconds into the 91st minute. The Bears outshot Fredonia 18-9 and had six corners to four for the Blue Devils.
