Bears storm back to defeat Cards 3-2 in SUNYAC opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (7-5, 1-0 SUNYAC) was on the brink, down 2-0 before rallying for a 3-2 win at Plattsburgh State (5-8, 0-1) in its SUNYAC opener. Freshman outside hitter Anika Anderson (Honolulu, Hawaii/Radford) led the Bears with a career and game-high 16 kills.
 
The Cardinals took sets one and two 25-20 and 25-19. Potsdam won a back-and-forth third set 25-18 before cruising to 25-13 and 15-7 wins in sets four and five. Anderson also had three assists, two aces, nine digs and a block assist. Senior captain Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) registered 10 kills, 11 digs and a block assist. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) totaled nine kills and five blocks. Junior captain Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had 43 assists, two aces and 12 digs. Senior captain Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) contributed nine kills, six digs, an ace and a block, while freshman middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) added four kills. Senior defensive specialist Whitney Coyle (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) finished with 12 digs and an ace and junior libero Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) had seven digs.
 
The Bears have two critical conference matches tomorrow. Potsdam faces off with SUNY New Paltz at noon and SUNY Geneseo at 2:30 p.m.
