Oneonta, NY. The SUNY Oneonta softball team split with conference rival SUNY Cortland today. With the spilt, Oneonta's record is now 10-10 and 4-4 in the SUNYAC. At the end of the day Cortland's record moved to 11-12 and 4-2 in the SUNYAC. For Oneonta, sophomore Julia Calabaro earned her fourth win of the season in a complete game five-hitter in game two.
In game one, Cortland's offense scored nine runs on 13 hits en route to a 9-1 victory. The first three batters for Cortland, Andrea Schoomaker, Taylor Feliello and Skyler Hoyt, combined to go 9-12 with six runs scored and five runs batted in.
Oneonta's lone run came in the second inning when
Bailey Schwark (Port Ewen/Kingston) singled to drive
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South). Sophomore
Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) went 2-3 in game one.
In game two, Oneonta beat Cortland in a contest that went down to the wire. Oneonta found themselves in a similar situation in the middle of the second inning, down 1-0. In the bottom half of the frame, Oneonta strung together three hits including a single through the left side by Schwark to score
Amanda Sexton (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) to knot the game at one.
In the third inning, Oneonta struck again for two runs to build its lead to 3-1. Oneonta started off the inning with a single by junior
Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke). A double by senior
Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) pushed Ruiz to third base to give Oneonta a threatening second and third scenario with none out. Cortland was able to battle back and retire the next two batters to bring the situation to second and third with two outs. But with a 1-1 count, Sexton laced a ball up the gut of the defense to score both Ruiz and pinch runner
Alyssa Garrison (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) to give Oneonta the two run advantage.
Oneonta held on to win 3-2 due to a strong pitching effort by Calabro. In the complete game, the sophomore held the Cortland offense to five hits while striking out four.
