Landers deals a win

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Senior Ryan Landers (Fairport, N.Y. / Fairport) spun a five-hit shutout as the Fredonia baseball team cruised to an 8-0 over Brockport in the first game of the doubleheader. Brockport took the nightcap, 14-5.

Landers struck out four and walked three. He was aided by a 13-hit attack as the Devils scored  a run in the first and a run in the second. Daniel Goodbread (Tully, N.Y. / Tully) drove in Patrick Sheehan (West Seneca, N.Y. / Orchard Park) with the first run after Sheehan singled and stole second.

A dropped fly ball in the second led to another Fredonia run.

Two more runs in the fourth allowed the Devils to take command. Kole Brink (Frewsburg, N.Y. / Frewsburg) drove in the first run on a base hit, then came around to score when Sheehan singled.

They tacked on three more in the sixth, and one in the top of the ninth.

Sheehan and Brink both finished with three hits, while Matt Kelner (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) and Derek Fie (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) each added a pair of safeties.

The Devils found themselves in trouble early in the second game after giving up eight runs in the first, and three in the second. Pierce Gardon (Holland, N.Y. / Holland) took the loss on the mound.

Fredonia moves to 13-12 overall, and 4-9 in the SUNYAC. Brockport is now 15-15 and 9-7 in the conference.

The teams play the rubber match of the series at Noon on Sunday.
