Head Coach Stephanie Conroy Earns 200th Career Win; Softball Sweeps Potsdam

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State head softball coach Stephanie Conroy earned her 200th career win in the Cardinals' 6-5 walk-off victory over SUNY Potsdam in game one of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Cardinal Park. The Cardinals completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory in five innings over the Bears in game two.

Conroy now sits at 201-148 for her career and is the second coach in the 19-year history of the program to amass 200 wins. Former head coach Sean Cotter holds the program record in coaching wins with 254 from 2000-09.

Plattsburgh State rises to 16-15 overall (8-6 SUNYAC) with the wins and next hosts SUNY New Paltz on Friday, April 27, in a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Potsdam falls to 5-21 overall (2-10 SUNYAC) with the losses and next hosts SUNY Oneonta on Friday, April 27, at 3 p.m. in a twinbill.

Game 1: Plattsburgh State 6, Potsdam 5

Down a run, the Cardinals rallied in the seventh to load the bases, and junior catcher Anna Fisher (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) plated the tying and winning runs with a single up the middle with two outs.

Junior first baseman Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single before senior left fielder Dominique Zummo (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout put two outs on the board, senior designated player Kelsey Gage (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) singled to the shortstop before stealing second. Senior center fielder Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) drew a walk to load the bases, which set the stage for Fisher. Fisher drove a single up the middle on a 2-1 pitch during the ensuing at-bat, which scored Groat and Gage and ended the game in walk-off fashion.

Plattsburgh State scored four runs in the second. Two runs came across on a fielding error before junior third baseman Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) singled to right field to plate Fisher. Groat worked a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.

Potsdam countered by surging for five runs in the top of the third. Senior designated player Samantha Hubinsky put the Bears on the board with an RBI single to right center before sophomore first baseman Megan Fish drew a bases-loaded walk three batters later. Sophomore left fielder Lucy Condon cleared the bases during the ensuing at-bat, doubling to center field before advancing to third on the throw to the plate.

Gage and Fisher each went 2-for-4 in game one to pace the Cardinal bats, with Gage adding two runs scored, a triple and a stolen base and Fisher tallying two RBI, a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Hubinsky was the lone Bear with multiple hits in game one.

Senior pitcher Katie Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) earned the win to move to 7-6 for the season, yielding five runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks while striking out five. Freshman pitcher Kayla Palmer was saddled with the loss for Potsdam, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits, four walks and a hit by pitch while striking out one.

Game 2: Plattsburgh State 8, Potsdam 0 (5 inn.)

The Cardinals erupted for 12 hits in the nightcap, while sophomore pitcher Rhea Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) threw a three-hit shutout.

Groat kicked off scoring with an RBI double in the first, and Torres drew a bases-loaded walk later on in the inning to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage. Two more runs came across for Plattsburgh State in the second, as Groat drove in a run on a sacrifice fly before Zummo plated a second runner during the ensuing at-bat.

Junior shortstop Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) and freshman second baseman Shannon Myles (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) each had RBI base knocks in the third to extend the lead to six, and senior designated player Jackie Decker (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) handed the Cardinals a 7-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI groundout. Finally, Zummo ended the game in the fifth, driving in a run on an infield single to enact the eight-run rule.

Preiss and Zummo each had three hits for Plattsburgh State in game two, with Preiss going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI and Zummo batting 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run scored and a stolen base. Three different Bears registered a hit in the nightcap.

Rhea Pitkin threw well in the circle, scattering three hits and notching three strikeouts over her five innings of shutout work. Junior pitcher Alissa McCauley sustained the setback for Potsdam.
