Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer explodes for eight goals in win at New Paltz

Freshman Micaela Honsinger scores first three collegiate goals

Freshman Micaela Honsinger (New Hartford/New Hartford) scored her first three collegiate goals today in leading the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team to an 8-0 victory against Catskill Cup rival New Paltz.  The Red Dragons have now posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season and are now 3-9-1 overall and 3-4 in the SUNYAC with two conference games left to play.  The eight goals for Oneonta was the most they have scored since an identical 8-0 win against Potsdam in 2010.

Honsinger's first two goals today came in the first half where Oneonta built itself a 5-0 lead at halftime.  Juniors Jess Downin (Franklin/Franklin Central) and Kennedy Cocozzo (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and senior Emily Opalinski (East Amherst/Williamsville East) each tallied one goal for the Red Dragons in the first half.  Cocozzo also added an assist on Honsinger's first goal in the 28th minute that gave Oneonta a 3-0 lead.

Downin opened the scoring for Oneonta today in the 14th minute when she beat a charging keeper to the ball on a pass from McDermott.  Cocozzo made it 2-0 seven minutes later off an assist by Steinhauer.

Honsinger scored back-to-back before Opalinski capped the scoring in the first half with her goal in the 42nd minute.  Junior Sofia Cristando (Plainview/St. Anthony) assisted on Opalinski's goal playing the ball short on the corner kick before Opalinski put a shot in the upper right corner of the goal.

The Red Dragons added three more goals in the second half with senior Kayla Belush (Earlville/Sherburne-Earlville) and sophomore Abby Ousouljoglou (Bridgewater/Bridgewater Raritan Regional) scoring on either side of Honsinger's third goal of the game.  McDermott added a second assist on Belush's goal.  Ousouljoglou collected an assist on Honsinger's goal and the goalie, Melissa Muller (Holbrook/Sachem North), picked up an assist on the final goal of the game. Muller punted the ball past the defense where Ousouljoglou collected it and beat the keeper 1v1.

Oneonta will take its two-game winning streak to SUNY Poly on Tuesday for a match beginning at 7pm.
