Bears fall to Red Dragons, Bengals in SUNYAC Finale

BUFFALO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (11-15, 1-8 SUNYAC) fell to the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (10-13, 4-4 SUNYAC) 3-0 and Buffalo State Bengals (6-19, 2-7 SUNYAC) 3-2 on Day 2 of SUNYAC Pool Play at Buffalo on Saturday.
 
The Red Dragons downed the Bears 25-14, 25-23, and 25-21 in the first match of the day.  Junior captain Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) led the team with 18 assists, 12 digs, and three aces, while senior captain Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) had seven kills and four digs. Freshman middle hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) totaled five kills and two digs. Junior defensive specialist Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) finished the contest with eight digs.
 
In the finale, the Bears took the first set 25-13 before the Bengals took the next two sets 25-23 and 25-17. Potsdam won set four 25-19, forcing a set five where Buffalo State earned a 15-13 win. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led the team with 12 kills and three blocks. Rodda had 37 assists, two aces, and tied her season-high with 17 digs. Healis registered nine kills, seven digs, and two aces while freshman middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) added eight kills and two blocks. Freshman opposite Cierra Farnschlader (Palm Bay, Fla./Palm Bay Magnet) contributed seven kills and two blocks.
 
Potsdam hosts Clarkson Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. for Senior Night. Prior to the contest, seniors Whitney Coyle (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley), Healis, captain Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak), Tompkins, and Meghan Smith (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) will be honored.
