Phelps Hits 100 Goal and 100 Assist Mark in 17-7 Win vs. Geneseo

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Graduate student Devin Phelps (Chittenango) scored two goals to become just the sixth player in program history to reach 100 career goals and 100 career assists as the Cortland men's lacrosse team defeated Geneseo, 17-7, in SUNYAC action Wednesday afternoon. Phelps also added three assists and currently has 205 career points on 100 goals and 105 assists.

Junior Joey Panariello (Islip) netted a game-high four goals for the Red Dragons (9-6, 4-1 SUNYAC). Senior Thomas McNaney (Marcellus) matched Phelps with five points on three goals and two assists, junior Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields) recorded three goals and one assist and senior Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) tallied two goals and one assist.

Senior Trevor Pratt (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) and freshmen Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) and Ryan Forcino (West Islip) each notched a goal with Forcino's score being the first of his career. Senior Eddie Eddington (Geneva) picked up two assists, while seniors Liam Erickson (Brewster) and Tyler Brown (Camillus/West Genesee) each contributed one assist for Cortland.

Senior goalie Joe Scalise (Fairport) made eight saves in 45 minutes for the Red Dragons before giving way to sophomore Will DeCamp (Bay Shore), who stopped one shot in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 14-of-17 faceoffs and collected six ground balls, and freshman James Rao (Islip) won 7-of-9 faceoffs with four ground balls. Phelps and freshman Tristan Hogan (Westhampton Beach) each secured four ground balls.

Sophomore Matthew Malone (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) led the Knights (7-6, 2-3) with a pair of goals. Freshman Tim Fallo (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland) recorded one goal and two assists, junior Kyle Wanamaker (Valley Cottage/Nyack) tallied one goal and one assist, and seniors Ryan Kelly (Mendon/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Andrew Cummings (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and freshman Connor Griffin (Lake Grove/Sachem North) each scored one goal.

Sophomore goalie Tyler Wetzel (Fairport) registered 12 saves for Geneseo. Senior Ryan Cates (Centerport/Harborfields) produced game highs of nine ground balls and six caused turnovers. Freshman Tyler Bushnell (Honeoye Falls) caused three turnovers, and freshman Jimmy McGrath (Elwood/John Glenn) scooped up three ground balls.

Cortland took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter and extended the advantage to 7-2 at the half. Panariello scored three goals and McNaney netted a pair of goals in the opening 30 minutes. The Red Dragons took control of the game by outscoring the Knights, 7-2, in the third quarter in building a 14-4 lead. Phelps recorded his 100th career goal off a McNaney assist 11 seconds before the end of the quarter. Each team netted three goals in the final 15 minutes with Forcino's first career goal capping the scoring for the 17-7 final.

The Red Dragons wrap up their regular season at Potsdam on Saturday with a chance to secure the top seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament with a win.
