SUNY New Paltz Tennis Clinch Top-Seed in SUNYAC Playoffs With 9-0 Win Over Fredonia State

Box Score Binghamton, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz tennis team clinched the top seed in the State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) tournament Saturday after its 9-0 sweep of Fredonia State.
 
The Hawks (6-0 overall, 6-0 SUNYAC), coming off an impressive sweep over seven-time defending conference champions SUNY Geneseo Saturday, didn't let up against the Blue Devils (11-3, 3-3), only dropping 16 points throughout the match. Laura Koob GIF
 
"This was another very all around solid performance," said SUNY New Paltz coach Rob Bruley. "Although scores don't reflect it Fredonia put up very tough opposition. I'm pleased that we got ourselves up for this game and done a great job of closing match out. The hours or practice the we have put in for doubles and singles is really beginning to show in our play."
 
Trinity Chow and Laura Koob won their first doubles match, 8-1, over Anna Chiacchia and Olivia Miller, while Lindsay Haley and Victoria Zezula earned an 8-4 win in second doubles and Emma Messenger and Courtney Koran won their third doubles match, 8-3.
 
Chow, Koran, and Haley all swept their singles matches. Chow defeated Anna Chiacchia in first singles, while Koran and Haley beat Jane Chiacchia and Taylor Marelli in fifth and sixth, singles respectively.
 
Koob defeated Miller in second singles, 6-2, 6-2, while Zezula earned a 6-4, 6-0 third singles victory over Sarah Bunk with Jenna Grandville picking up a 6-2, 6-2 win against Mikayla Johnson in fourth singles.
 
With the victory, the Hawks clinched the No. 1 seed in the next weekend's SUNYAC tournament, despite having one game left of the regular season. They will conclude the year with The College at Brockport Sunday before playoffs begin Oct. 13 and 14.
