First-Half Lead Slips Away in 8-7 Loss at St. John Fisher

Box Score PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The nationally 23rd-ranked St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team outscored 15th-ranked Cortland, 6-1, in the second half to earn an 8-7 win Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Growney Stadium. With the loss, the Red Dragons dropped to 5-2. The Cardinals improved to 3-1 with the victory.

Seven different players scored goals for Cortland, led by senior Jaycie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) who tallied one goal and two assists. Junior Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) was the only other Red Dragon to record a multiple-point game with one goal and one assist. Senior Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North), sophomores Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee), Molly Newton (Skaneateles) and Baylee Ojeda (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and freshman Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) each added one goal.

Freshman goalie Annie Casey (Bay Shore) stopped seven shots for Cortland. Meager collected three ground balls and won seven draw controls, senior Liza Ferro (Cortland) recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers and junior Hailey Dobbins (Syracuse/CBA) chipped in with three ground balls and three draws.

Mallory Eymer led St. John Fisher with three goals, Claire Bollin netted two goals, and Kelsie Schindler, Morgan Young and Jenna Lippert each contributed a goal.

Goalie Molly Maguire made 10 saves and secured three ground balls. Eymer registered four ground balls, Bollin collected three ground balls and won four draws, Hayley Maguire recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers and Erin Mills added three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Cortland built a 6-2 lead at the half, aided by a four-goal run. The Cardinals netted the first four goals of the second half to forge a 6-6 tie with 11:12 remaining. Meager broke the streak with a free-position goal at 9:11 to put the Red Dragons up, 7-6. Bollin tied the game from the free position at 5:40 and Eymer netted the game winner with 18 seconds on the clock. Dobbins won the ensuing draw for Cortland, but the Red Dragons could not get off a potential game-tying shot as the Cardinals held on for the 8-7 win.
