Men's Ice Hockey Drops 7-1 Decision to Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team resumed State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a 7-1 loss to Buffalo State on Friday evening at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.
 
Senior forward Zach Nieminen posted a hat trick to lead the Bengal offense, while sophomore defenseman Michael Anthony Guerrera was credited with three assists.
 
Buffalo State finished with a 31-23 edge in shots on goal and went 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Cardinals went 1-for-6 with the extra attacker. The Bengals also scored a shorthanded goal.
 
Plattsburgh State drops to 4-5-0 overall (2-4-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and closes out its western New York trip tomorrow with a 7 p.m. game at Fredonia. Buffalo State rises to 6-3-1 overall (2-2-1 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts SUNY Potsdam tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
 
Nieminen scored unassisted 8:46 into the game before sophomore forward Hugo Petit tallied just 21 seconds later on assists from Guerrera and sophomore forward Anthony Passero.
 
In the second period, Buffalo State's senior forward Ryan Stayner scored 3:32 into the frame on a pass from sophomore forward Jon Colley, while Nieminen counted on assists from Guerrera and sophomore forward Zach Remers to score on the power play nearly four minutes later. Freshman forward Reid Bibb scored unassisted 8:43 into the period shorthanded before Nieminen completed the hat trick with 34 seconds left in the second. Guerrera and Bibb each tallied assists on the goal.
 
Junior forward Mac Wood found twine on the power play 4:09 into the third period, with sophomore forward Ben Butcher and freshman defenseman Cory Symonds earning assists on the score, while junior forward Pat Egan (Rochester, N.Y./Lone Star Brahmas) erased the shutout bid with 15:17 elapsed in the period on the power play. Senior defenseman Ayrton Valente (Woodbridge, Ontario/Mississauga Chargers) and freshman forward Liam Lawson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Powell River Paper Kings) notched assists on the play.
 
Freshman goaltender Lawson Fenton (Medina, N.Y./Coquitlam Express) was saddled with the loss, making six saves in 9:07 of action, while freshman goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) turned aside 18 shots in the final 50:53 of play. Buffalo State's senior goaltender Ian Sylves earned the win with a 22-save performance.
