Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mackin eclipses 1,000 points; Men's basketball defeats Plattsburgh

A Quick Look
Senior Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) became the 14th player in men's history to eclipse 1,000 points tonight, as he led the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a 97-76 victory against Plattsburgh in the SUNYAC opener for both squads.  Mackin led all scorers in the game with 26 points on the strength of a career best eight three-pointers.

"The thing I am most proud of about tonight was our 24 assists," said Head Coach Cameron Conover.  "We really looked for each other and made the extra pass, which leads to better shots."

Conover continued, "Obviously, it was a special night for Kevin scoring his 1000th point.  We have a lot of hard workers, all who put in extra work, but no one puts in more work than him.  He works on his game relentlessly, and it is no coincidence why he is a good player.  His teammates recognize the work he puts in and that was why they were so happy for him when he scored his 1000th point."

The Inside Story
Oneonta dominated the second half after holding a slim 46-45 lead at halftime.  A 19-4 burst in the first five minutes of the second half gave Oneonta (2-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) the space it needed.  Mackin buried three from long range to fuel the run.

The Red Dragons continued to pile it on building its lead to 20 points on a Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) layup with just under four minutes remaining.  Deegan would finish the game with 17 points.

The opening half was played close throughout with a combined 10 lead changes.  The last lead for Plattsburgh (2-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) came at 45-44 on a basket by Adam Jaquish with 46 seconds left.  On the ensuing possession, Oneonta took the lead for good on a Deegan layup with 20 seconds to go.

For the opening three minutes of tonight's contest, Mackin and Plattsburgh senior Jeremy Eisenman traded multiple baskets with Mackin ahead 6-5.  Eisenman continued to score while junior Joseph Bull (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) emerged to carry the Red Dragons through the next few minutes with eight points of his own.  Bull would tally 15 points for the night.

Just the Stats
Oneonta made 14, three-point shots in tonight's game, which is tied for the third most all-time in a single game.  Joining Mackin with multiple treys was Bull and sophomore Dylan Trombley (Moriah, NY/Moriah) with three each.  Trombley came off the bench to score 13 points.

Oneonta shot just under 56 percent from the floor for the game including 14-of-29 from behind the arc.  The Red Dragons recorded 24 assists on its 39 baskets and committed only five turnovers.

What's Next
Oneonta will play host to Potsdam tomorrow afternoon beginning at 4pm.  "Tomorrow is another day, and we have to be prepared for a Potsdam team that is off to a terrific start.  It will be a battle," concluded Conover.
