Seventh Inning Comeback Falls Short At Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team dropped a pair of games against Oswego State on Sunday afternoon, falling to 11-15 (1-9 conference) on the season. The Golden Eagles still have eight conference games remaining, and will look to get back in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoff race with a late season push.

Game 1: Loss, 5-2
With the team trailing 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Morgan Flamholtz got the Golden Eagles on the board when she swung on the first pitch of the at-bat and ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Alison Missavage from second. Flamholtz ended the game with two hits in her three at-bats, matching Meghan Cullen for the team-high in that category

The other Brockport run came in the top of the seventh when Alexis Ross led off the inning with a walk and was moved along by Cullen who dribbled an infield single to the pitcher. After a pair of outs were recorded, Ross came home to score on a passed ball, bringing Brockport to within three.

With two down in the inning however, it proved too late to mount a comeback, and the Lakers were able to hold on for the 5-2 win.

Julia Palopoli pitched the full six innings for the Green and Gold, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out three. She was aided by nine hits coming from seven different Brockport players, but the hits were not timely today, as the Golden Eagles stranded nine runners on base.

Game 2: Loss, 6-5
The offense got started early in game two, using a first inning two out rally to take an early 1-0 lead. After Casey Danko reached base on a catcher's interference, Lindsay Wachna lined an RBI double down the right field line to drive her in.

After the Lakers got the run back in the bottom of the first, Brockport responded in the third inning, using a leadoff double from Alexis Ross to put another run on the board, regaining the lead. They'd add another in the top of the sixth when Lindsay Wachna was driven home on a double in the gap by Alison Missavage, putting the Golden Eagles up 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.

Oswego was not ready to quit, registering five runs on five hits and two errors in the bottom half of the inning, taking their first lead of the game and all the momentum. A two-RBI double from Danko in the top of the seventh was not enough, as Oswego was able to hang on for the 6-5 win and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Ross led the team with three hits in the game, while Danko had two, and led the squad with three RBI. Amanda Colon got the start in the circle, pitching five solid innings, but took the loss after faltering in the sixth.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to SUNY Potsdam for a doubleheader against the Bears beginning at 2 p.m.
