SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Loses First Conference Match of the Season 4-1 to SUNY Oneonta

| By:
Box Score New Paltz, NY – In a battle between two teams who were undefeated in SUNYAC play, it was SUNY Oneonta that came out with a 4-1 victory over the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team on Wednesday afternoon at the North Turf Field.

It's the first loss SUNY New Paltz has suffered against SUNY Oneonta since the 2014 season.

"Today we struggled to be patient and organized on defense," Hawks head coach Shanna Szablinski said. "Oneonta's goalie is aggressive and we struggled to change the line of the ball. They capitalized on their opportunites and it ultimately put them on top."

The Hawks fall to 4-5 overall (3-1 SUNYAC) while the Red Dragons improve to 7-2 overall (3-0 SUNYAC).

SUNY New Paltz did strike first in the 20th minute when senior Justine O'Reilly scored her conference-leading 13th goal and her ninth in three games. Junior Samantha Ackerman assisted O'Reilly's goal, her second of the season.

SUNY Oneonta got even at the 26:24 mark on a goal by junior Allyson Wells that was assisted by Sierra Palmatier after Palmatier's shot was saved by senior Megan Gangewere and Wells knocked in the deflection.

The Red Dragons went up 2-1 before halftime on a goal from freshman Colleen Geyer off a corner from junior Allyson Bilow. Senior Nicole Johnston also tallied an assist on the play.

Senior Natalie Longo made it a 3-1 game in the 53rd minute off an assist from Wells. The Red Dragons got their final goal of the game from freshman Grace Bilow and an assist from Palmatier at the 63:11 mark.

"We possessed the ball really well today and we were able to make quick counter attacks and that's how we scored our goals," Red Dragons head coach Kelly Kingsbury said. "We also blasted stick to stick, stretched the field well and worked the ball around to tire them out."

SUNY New Paltz outshot SUNY Oneonta 20-16 and held a 12-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Gangewere notched 10 saves in the cage, while O'Reilly led the team with five shots. Senior Hayley Kim and sophomore Kaitlyn Gunter each recorded four shots, and junior Serena Capsello notched three. Freshman Carly Croteau posted two shots, while junior Maggie Cottrell and freshman Renee Salerno each registered one.

The Hawks will take a break from conference play and next travel to St. John Fisher College on Sunday, Oct. 1.
