Cortland Sweeps Oswego to Salvage Split on Day 2 of SUNYAC Play

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Cortland picked up its first SUNYAC women's volleyball victory of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Oswego Saturday evening to close out the weekend's league matches, hosted by Fredonia. The Red Dragons lost in five sets to Fredonia earlier in the day and are now 6-8 overall and 1-2 in SUNYAC play.

Cortland defeated Oswego 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 behind 11 kills each from Jessica Allen (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Courtney Silberer (Centereach). Allen committed only one attack error in 17 attempts for a .588 attack percentage, while Silberer hit at a .290 clip. Allen led the team with four blocks.

Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) added six kills, and Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) finished with 29 assists, eight digs and three blocks. Alexandra Graff paced the Red Dragons with 16 digs and Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) pitched in with 12 digs.

Shauna O'Flaherty led Oswego (6-9, 1-2 SUNYAC) with eight kills and Rina Qelaj had 15 digs.

Cortland opened the day with a loss to Fredonia, with the Blue Devils winning by scores of 25-13, 16-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-11.

Courtney Silberer finished with 11 kills and three blocks, while Nicole Silberer (Centereach) and Allen each totaled 10 kills. Allen committed no errors in 24 swings for a .417 hitting percentage, and also held the team lead with six blocks. Moore added five kills and five blocks, and Amelio registered team bests of 34 assists, five aces and 20 digs.

Also for the Red Dragons, Graff and Valerie Fischer (Williston Park/Mineola) added 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

Fredonia (9-6, 2-1 SUNYAC following a 5-set loss to Brockport later in the day) was paced by Kristen Stanek's 18 kills and Kailey Falk's 14 kills and 18 digs. Hallie Christopher dished out 47 assists and added 12 digs.

Cortland will compete at the Skidmore Classic Friday-Saturday, Sept. 29-30. The Red Dragons face Hunter Friday at 6 p.m. and will play Sage Colleges and Skidmore Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m., respectively.
