SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Shutout On The Road Agianst SUNY Cortland

Box Score Cortland, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team lost on the road against SUNY Cortland Saturday.
 
The Hawks (5-10 overall, 4-2 SUNYAC) had the ability to clinch a top seed in the SUNYAC playoffs with a win and a SUNY Oneonta loss, but with Cortland pulling away with a 5-0 win over SUNY New Paltz and the Red Dragons defeating Oswego State, 5-1, the Hawks earned a No. 3 seed and will travel to Oneonta for the first round of playoffs.
 
Cortland (13-3 overall, 5-1 SUNYAC) held the advantage in corners (9-4) and shots (29-14) in the game, while totaling 22 shots on frame.
 
Jessica Welsh opened up the scoring for the Red Dragons in the 24th minute, and about 30 seconds later Jess Gibaldi tacked on another after putting away a pass from Anna Branch.
 
Gibaldi and Welsh each found the back of the cage another time in the 33rd and 52nd minute, respectively, and Megan O'Brien capped off the day with Oneonta's fifth goal in the 69th minute.
 
Justine O'Reilly led the Hawks offensively with nine shots, including six on goal, while Kaitlyn Gunter and Serena Capsello followed with two shots apiece.
 
Megan Gangewere totaled 14 saves for SUNY New Paltz, while Kailynne Reinoehl made 10 stops for the Red Dragons.
 
The Hawks still have two more games left on their regular season schedule. They take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in their home-finale Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then travel to Vassar College Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
