NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) tossed a five-hit shutout as Cortland defeated host New Paltz, 6-0, in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. The Red Dragons (13-12, 6-2 SUNYAC) completed the sweep of the Hawks with a 9-6 win in the second contest after scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning.

Cortland will travel to Ithaca for a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before hosting three SUNYAC doubleheaders next weekend - Friday versus Geneseo at 3 p.m., Saturday versus Brockport at noon, and Sunday against Plattsburgh at noon.

Cortland 6, New Paltz 0

Van Dorn improved to 7-5 with her third shutout of the season. She struck out six batters and walked one. Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, and Averee May (Highland Falls/James I. O'Neill) was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run. Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) ended 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI.

Cortland put three runs on the board in the second on a Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) RBI squeeze bunt, a Cuttita RBI single and May's run-scoring double. O'Gorman singled and eventually scored on a Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) RBI groundout in the fourth, and the Red Dragons added two in the seventh on a Schoonmaker two-run single.

Van Dorn only allowed one New Paltz runner to reach scoring position when Julia Perhacs led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and stole second. Perhacs finished 2-for-3. New Paltz starter Lauren Cappello gave up 10 hits and six runs, five earned, over seven innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

Cortland sent 12 batters to plate during its seven-run top of the first inning. O'Gorman doubled in a run, followed by a Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) RBI single. After a Hoyt double, Sadowski drove in Feldman with a groundout and Scharff hit an RBI single to left. Following a pair of walks, Schoonmaker hit an infield RBI single and Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) hit a two-run double to left center.

New Paltz answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Cappello singled home a run and Kelsey Trudden hit a two-run single up the middle. The Hawks added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Trudden, who finished 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI.

The game remained at 7-4 until the seventh. Cortland opened its half of the frame with a Feldman infield single and Hoyt sac bunt. Ericka Sadowski (Liverpool) singled to drive in pinch runner Alissa De Padua (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) and, two batters later, Cuttita hit an RBI single to left.

New Paltz (11-14, 4-4 SUNYAC) used a combination of three walks, two wild pitches and a Julia Dispigna RBI infield single to score twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Van Dorn, who entered in relief midway through the inning with no outs and two on in officially a non-save situation, induced two groundouts to finish the game.

Feldman led Cortland with a 3-for-4, one RBI, one run effort, Sadowski was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, and Schoonmaker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run. Cuttita finished 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI and run. Madison Rappold was 2-for-3 and Dispigna and Leonette each were 2-for-4.

Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) earned the win in relief with two and a third innings of one-hit ball. She walked two and was charged with New Paltz's two runs in the seventh. New Paltz starter Alyssa Pfitscher was knocked out with two outs in the first and gave up five runs on five hits.
